Exploring the inner world is a quest that accompanied me for all my life. During my childhood, I remember how my mother was at times at awe about my intuitive wisdom and at times very challenged about my sharp and profound questions about life. Later, when I was older, I felt sometimes irritated with myself for being often busy with such serious matters while other children and teens were perfectly happy without these mental and psychological conundrums.
According to Carl G. Jung, from the book Man and his Symbols, "the process of creative self-realization generally begins with a wounding of the personality and the suffering that accompanies it. This initial shock amounts to a sort of 'call' although it is not recognized as such".
After reading this sentence I realized how the questions I had about my life experience started to find some answers. As I think back about my childhood, I realize that my solitary childhood in nature and my difficult family upbringing encouraged me to look inside myself and tune in over time with the center that we all have inside, called by Jung "the Self". The author defines the Self as "an inner guiding factor that is different from the conscious personality and that can be grasped only through the investigation of one's own dreams". In order to find the way to our own selves we must listen to our intuition and imagination to find out what the Self wants us to do here and now. "We should surrender to this dominating impulse that comes from the urge toward unique, creative self-realization. The guiding hints come not from the Ego but from the totality of the psyche: the Self". We cannot copy someone else's development, "because each of us has a unique task of self-realization".
Reading through this surprising book, I realized what I felt happening inside of me for a long time and could not fully understand. My intuition has been the tool that helped me survive through difficult times in my life. I felt that the connection I developed with nature at first, the discovery of journal writing later, and finally studying art and becoming a painter were all means that allowed me to learn what the psyche wanted me to do in order to become a more complete human being. The task in life is to become ourselves. I am still undertaking this inner journey. It is a never ending travel once we find the way to it. It is hard work, also because external things such as mass media and careers, family obligations, or society's expectations constantly distract us from it, but in the end it is fascinating and rewarding.
